Jar Testing Polyacrylamide for Sedimentation Tanks

Jar testing is the fastest way to understand whether a PAM grade will create dense floc, clear overflow, and a manageable sludge blanket.

Jar testing polyacrylamide for sedimentation water treatment
A useful jar test compares floc strength, settling speed, and clear-water separation under realistic mixing.

Start with water from the real process

Use site water whenever possible. Salinity, pH, oil, clay, and biological solids can all change polymer behavior. A clean-water test may show hydration quality, but it will not prove field performance.

Screen the PAM family first

For mineral solids, include anionic polyacrylamide. For organic sludge or biological solids, include cationic polyacrylamide. If chemistry is uncertain, also test a nonionic polyacrylamide candidate.

Watch for overdosing

The clearest jar at the highest dose is not automatically the best choice. Overdosing can create fragile floc, slimy sludge, or carryover when the plant mixing conditions change.
